It’s Cole and Kelsea!
So last year we had the pleasure of visiting Shanghai, and while we had a fantastic time, we did come to surprisingly find that designer luxury goods were significantly more expensive there compared to the United States and Europe.
Upon this finding, we did our research and learned that Europe is actually the cheapest place to buy designer items. At first, we were a little taken aback, as Europe often gets flak for being very pricey in general, whereas Asia is stereotypically known for being super cheap.
However, when it comes to luxury designer goods, the roles are reversed.
We’re here to tell you why this is so that when you do plan your next shopping vacation, you consider choosing a destination that will give you the best deals on all your designer must-haves!
As you fashion snobs most likely know, Europe is the birthplace of most of our beloved luxury designers, so check them out by country below.
French Luxury Designers include:
Balenciaga, Cartier, Celine, Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Hermés, Louis Vuitton, YSL, & more!
Italian Luxury Designers include:
Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Prada, Valentino, Versace, & more!
British Luxury Designers include:
Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Jimmy Choo, Ted Baker, Vivienne Westwood, & more!
Here are some helpful & important steps to follow to make sure you’ll get your VAT refund on big purchased designer items:
1. Prior to checkout, tell the sales associate that you want VAT refund paperwork. You’ll need to show your passport in store to prove that you’re not a European citizen, and then you’ll receive the paperwork in an envelope along with the receipt.
2. Before leaving Europe, show your purchases and get your paperwork stamped by customs at an airport tax refund counter.
3. Choose how you want your refund; either in cash where the perk is that you receive it immediately (however you get a slightly less percentage back), or via your credit card, which takes about 2-3 weeks for the refund to clear.
4. Mail the stamped paperwork with the envelopes the store gave you. The envelopes should already be pre-paid for postage and have mailing addresses printed on them for the third-party service offices. You can then track down the status of your refund online.
The stores will mail you back a check. This is usually the route we take because we (snobs) hate standing in line – especially with a baby.
— And that’s it! From there you just patiently wait to receive a nice tax refund back into your account (which will hopefully ease any nerves you may be experiencing from spending thousands of $$$ on handbags, shoes, clothing, etc.)
** Snob World Helpful Tip for Shopping Abroad:
Make sure to use a credit card without foreign transaction fees. Also, notify your credit card company of your upcoming travels to avoid your bank suspecting fraud and freezing your account whilst you’re in the midst of doing your dream shopping.
So, there you have it, snobs! Now you know exactly where to go when you want the best deals on luxury designer goods. Get ready to shop ‘till you drop!
