When seasons change, so does our skin. When you think about changing your wardrobe from season to season, you should also do the same with your skincare routine. In colder seasons such as fall and winter, our skin becomes more sensitive to our environment.
Being exposed to these conditions leaves our skin vulnerable and prone to dryness, flakiness, dullness, and irritation. Some areas, such as cheeks, lips, and hands, are easy targets when exposed to these conditions.
While cold environments change our skin’s appearance, there are things you can do to help prevent and boost your skin in the upcoming cold month:
Switch to a Rich Moisturizer
I don’t know about you, but my face is dry and prone to irritation in the colder seasons. I like to change my moisturizer to one that is richer in texture and ingredients. Dior’s L’OR DE VIE La crème riche is the perfect face cream to hydrate, plump, and calm the skin.
Use a Mild Exfoliator
Exfoliation is essential all year round, especially in the colder seasons, to boost blood circulation and gently remove dead dry skin cells. It is also necessary to not over-exfoliate your skin as it can lead to your skin becoming more dry, sensitive and can develop flakiness.
I like incorporating a mild exfoliator that I use daily to ensure my face is removed from all make-up, dirt, oil, and other impurities that can cause my face to break out. I recommend using Mara’s “Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil.” This cleanser is enriched with hydrating ingredients that help hydrate the skin while gently removing any impurities and hard to get off make-up.
Serums are Your Best Friend
Aside from using rich moisturizers, serums are key to achieving hydrated skin in the colder seasons. Serums are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin layer, allowing your skin to be fully hydrated and protected. I make sure my serums are absorbing deeper into my skin’s layer using a micro-needling application tool.
Micro-needling is proven to help reduce scarring, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and allow serums to penetrate deep into the skins layer. I use Beauty Bio’s “GLOPRO® FACIAL MICRONEEDLING TOOL” for areas such as my cheeks, forehead, and even certain areas on my body. To understand more about micro-needling and its effects.
It is important to know that when micro-needling, you are creating micro-channels in the skin that stay open for around 5 minutes. During this time, it is an excellent opportunity to apply a rich serum. I use three serums by Dr. Barbara Sturm. The “Calming Serum,” “Hyaluronic Serum,” and “Sun Drops SPF50” are key to a hydrated face in the colder seasons. I like to call this trio the holy trinity as they hydrate, calm, and protect the skin in any environment.
Keep Your Hands & Lips Moisturized
Nothing is worst than the feeling of dry lips and hands. Applying a rich hand cream like Byredo’s “Hand Cream” leaves your hands feeling hydrated and smelling good. Byredo’s hand cream comes in many signature scents; I, however, love the Mojave Ghost scent as it has a lightness of Ambrette, Magnolia, and Violet notes.
Lastly are the lips. Nothing looks worse than a dry, cracked lip, mainly when lipstick or lipgloss is applied. To keep your lips feeling hydrated and nourished, I recommend using La Mer’s “Lip Balm” to help prevent further environmental damage.
Follow these tips to help achieve healthier, hydrated, and nourished skin through the colder seasons.
